COACHING|A BRIEF OVERVIEW

There is a word in Japanese, KAIZEN, “kai” meaning “change” and “zen” meaning “good”. The Japanese came to see this word as a philosophy of improvement, calling for a never-ending effort for improvement strategy. My focus is to help individuals whether on their own initiative or in relation to their organization, to implement and practice Kaizen methodologies. This is a multi-phased approach including making changes to their personal skills, competencies, knowledge, reactions, and activities, monitoring the results, then adjusting as necessary. Through a developed and strategic relationship with me as your ‘sensei’ or coach, you will develop certain methodologies in order to reach the pinnacle of your apex; ultimately, learning who you ARE apart from what you DO will allow you to find your 'Apex of Genius©'.
These practices are all about the birth place of brilliance through the artistry of skills you possess. It is about creating a vision, then painting that masterpiece! You will create the momentum that is needed to get where you want to be.

"Shaun’s insight and abilities to bring the best out in someone is a special gift. Shaun does not solve problems for someone, but rather leads him down a path that allows him to identify the problem, acknowledge it, and then solve it in a way that will change one’s life. He is constantly supportive but doesn’t allow you to slack off in your own personal work." ~Steve |
In simple terms, the focus is about your growth, whether CEO, professional business leader, teacher, or hard working committed employee, it does not matter your walk of life. You will learn to create a life mission and vision, create the life you want, find brilliance in your efforts, find out how interference is stopping your forward progress, how you are self-sabotaging your true potential, learn how to create, develop, and meet your life goals in a particular time frame, and much more. Coaching provides the ultimate accountability in our life! There may be advice given from your coach but ultimately coaching’s true reward is birthed from you own awareness of empowerment to create your own destiny!
Why does this work?
Many people that seek personal development have gotten lost in the minutia of the detail, problem, life issue, relationship, or situation; their vision is muddied. By nature of their position they have an up close reality. As your sensei, Shaun is an outside observer being able to see the whole arena and able to identify where things are colliding and is able to isolate the interference. Shaun can be an unbiased soundboard and help to sharpen skills. He provides:

What is your personal development style?
Typically a person's style of leadership and coaching flow through their strengths. My top five strengths are futuristic, learner, command, analytical, and restorative.
- Futuristic - I will believe with you, paint with you, and help you create a reachable, yet revolutionary vision for your life that is both tangible yet challenging. I cannot refrain from believing and talking about all the things human beings can create or accomplish in the future through their brilliant efforts.
- Learner - I will devote myself to learning about you, discovering how you process, how you adapt to change, and how, together, you will get to your next phase in your life journey with momentum and belief.
- Command - I tend to be more comfortable talking about ideas than issuing orders. I gravitate the conversations to intentionally cast aside emotions and concentrate on the facts however allowing your emotions to be heard and felt.
- Analytical - I enjoy taking time to evaluate ideas, philosophies, theories, concepts, plans, or issues. I am impelled to test whether the thoughts and those of others make sense. By nature, I may critically examine the essential elements of the current condition. I will toil tirelessly to identify the basic parts of plans, problems, opportunities, processes, or ideas.
- Restorative - I will trust that your talents, skills, and knowledge in making good judgments will move you toward your goals. Although I will become aware of your strengths, I will occasionally pause to reflect on things you could or need to do better. Aware of this continual improvement, we will do everything possible to keep your forward momentum happening.
How is coaching and therapy different?
In comparison, therapy looks at the individual's past to make clarity of the present. The therapist deals with emotional and mental problems a person can experience, based largely on the individuals past. A coach looks toward the future to help the person get where they want. In no way is coaching meant to or intended to replace therapy. If you are looking for a therapist I have a few referrals that I can put you in contact with.

To metaphorically understand the difference let’s say you wanted to learn to ride a unicycle. If you hired a:
- Consultant - a consultant would show you all the training videos on Youtube. He would talk about the laws of gravity, momentum, and sore muscles. After a while he would return to see what progress has been made. He would help you understand your limitations and why you are where you are.
- Mentor - the mentor would share his experiences of riding a unicycle and how freeing it is to only have one wheel. He would explain the lessons he learned and the wisdom gained from his experiences.
- Therapist - the therapist would identify what is holding you back from balancing on one wheel. They may dive into your past to see why your balance is off and what prior experiences you have had with balance.
- Coach - the coach would get you on the unicycle with one hand on a wall and holding your other hand getting you adjusted to a pedal forward, a pedal backwards. He would be there for support, encouragement, and endorsements until you feel comfortable to roll into the future... on one wheel.

My coaching sessions with Shaun has been life changing. Finding out that I was my own worst enemy was a revelation to me. It wasn’t anything big, yet it was the small things that was sabotaging my best efforts to succeed. Shaun was able to take me through different activates to define my strengths and weaknesses. Through these activities, we were able to work out the small quirks, which was keeping me from completing success. It was not only in my professional life, but in my personal life as well. Shaun’s insight and abilities to bring the best out in someone is a special gift. Shaun does not solve your problems for someone, but rather leads him down a path that allows him to identify the problem, acknowledge it, and then solve it in a way that will change one’s life. He is constantly supportive but doesn’t allow you to slack off in your own personal work. These times were encouraging, yet challenging at the same time.
Within the first two weeks I had started to see progress from our time together. He began to help me to identify “flags,” as we called them, and from that session my life became easier both professionally and personally. I had been avoiding the driver’s seat to my own life and allowing problems to build up without taking responsibility for how I reacted to the flag. These sessions began to bring me closer to walking a line of success instead of blaming everyone else for my defeats.
We also went through ways to get easy wins at home and at the workplace. The small things you can do every day to have little successes that would build to large ones instead of being an all or nothing win or lose. Not only do the small wins help to build your own confidence level, but they also help you to gain more approval in the professional world. You get to see how the small things will influence the larger ones. Even when you have small losses, those losses do not define you as much anymore because of the large cache of wins in your pocket.
Since I was coming in fresh and new to a job, the books he was having me read was helping to get a better grasp on how to relate with my co-workers. Once again, instead of doing something big to get the attention of my co-workers, Shaun reminded me of the small things. Even if they didn’t count as a success, people would notice the small things. It has worked and the team I work with now is a tight knit group where we all work together for the common good of the company.
My greatest achievement with Shaun was actually creating a plan of events for myself. I have never been good with schedules or really putting things down on a calendar but Shaun showed me some of the major benefits in doing so. I gave it a try, and it has revolutionized the way I do things. By having an event planned out up to ten months in advance of the various speaking topics that will be has made my life so much easier. I do not feel rushed at anytime, and if I get inspired for something that is coming up, I simply open up the file, and throw my thoughts down on the page to come back to at anytime to organize it. This allows the way my mind works to have structure, allowing it to be free and also keeping it focused on what needs to be done.
If you feel this type of coaching is needed to better your life, I would highly recommend Shaun Mayfield. He will impact your life!
